Online Course on International Water Law and the Law of Transboundary Aquifers - 7th Edition
Would you like to acquire or deepen your knowledge of international principles and norms that govern the management and protection of freshwater resources?
The Geneva Water Hub, together with the University of Geneva, invite you to participate in the 7th edition of its Online Course on International Water Law and the Law of Transboundary Aquifers which will take place from 10 October to 17 December 2022.
A quarter of the world population consumes unsafe drinking water, more than 90 per cent of disasters are water-related, and experts’ projections are alarming: by 2050, at least one in four people will be likely to live in a country affected by chronic freshwater shortages. World population, urbanisation and climate change are steadily increasing. The competing demands on water -such as the human, mining, industry, and agricultural sectors- will likewise continue to grow. This situation could trigger water-related tensions and conflicts.
In this context, knowledge of international standards and principles governing the management and protection of freshwater resources is necessary in order to negotiate and implement appropriate legal frameworks to keep the peace in this aspect in the world.
Course content and workload
This course consists of 6 thematic modules covering the foundations of international water law, the principles of international regulation of transboundary water resources, as well as the relationship between international water law and international environmental law, human rights, international humanitarian law, and international economic law. The last module consists of a simulation exercise on the negotiation and application of international water law
This modular and mainly asynchronous online course has been specially designed for professionals working on a full-time basis. Participants are expected to invest an average of 10 hours per week in reviewing the content and preparing for assignments, participating in the discussion forums and attending webinars, and online Q&A sessions.
Registrations and scholarship applications
The registration fee for this online training is 900 CHF (about 900 USD). The Geneva Water Hub, with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, offers partial and full scholarships to candidates from non-OECD countries, in particular, for candidates from the least developed countries.
