Water Talks Series n°3 - Prof. Jérémy Lucchetti
The Geneva Water Hub – Education & Knowledge component – is proud to present the 3rd edition of the "Water Talk Series". This series is an open-speech opportunity for researchers to expose and explain their ideas, their stances on contemporary challenges linked to water governance. The presentations, are in English or in French, short and impactful.
Prof. Jérémy Laurent-Lucchetti uses the tools of applied microeconomic to investigate topics related to political economy, environmental economics and development economics. After his PhD from the University of Montreal (HEC Montreal) he held a post-doc position at the University of Bern and was a visiting researcher at the Toulouse School of Economics. His recent work focuses on explaining the role of scarcity of resources in explaining conflicts in developing countries, with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. So far his papers have been published in journals such as the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Games and Economics Behaviour, the Journal of Economics and Management Strategy or the Scandinavian Journal of Economics.
Water scarcity and social violence in Sub-Saharan Africa.
In this presentation we will explain the link existing between water scarcity and social violence. We will assess the conjecture that unusually dry weather conditions breed local violence by triggering competition over scarce water resources. We will present recent aggregated evidence for Sub-Saharan Africa over the 1990-2011 period and a case study in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.
