Law, Policy and Science in Environmental Peacebuilding Training

The Geneva Water Hub, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, is offering a specialized training course on "Environmental Peacebuilding" in Geneva.

In the past decade, environmental peacebuilding has emerged as a multidisciplinary approach that recognizes the crucial role of the environment and natural resources throughout the conflict life-cycle.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, the Geneva Water Hub is proud to present the specialized training course, "Law, Policy, and Science in Environmental Peacebuilding," to be held in Geneva from 29 September to 3 October 2025. This course aims to comprehensively explore the theoretical foundations, legal frameworks, and challenges associated with environmental peacebuilding, considering recent developments.

Participants will delve into various aspects, including the evolution, components, and different approaches employed in peacebuilding and environmental peacebuilding; the significance of environmental factors in conflict and post-conflict situations; relevant legal frameworks that guide environmental peacebuilding; and emerging challenges and opportunities in this field.

This training course is tailored for professionals engaged in various sectors such as military, law enforcement, diplomacy, NGOs, and international organizations with a keen interest in humanitarian, peace, and development initiatives.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand and explain how natural resources and the environment influence armed conflicts and vice-versa.
  • Assess various components of peacebuilding, including environmental dimensions in conflict and post-conflict settings.
  • Evaluate legal frameworks relevant to environmental peacebuilding.
  • Identify and discuss the challenges and opportunities encountered in environmental peacebuilding efforts.

Methodology:

Our interactive training course includes a preparatory online session and combines lectures, panel discussions, case studies, and group activities. Sessions are designed to enhance substantive and practical knowledge exchange among peers and facilitators. Through this methodology, participants will gain insights into the conceptual foundations, legal frameworks, and strategies necessary for effective environmental peacebuilding.

Successful participants will receive a certificate of participation from the University of Geneva, recognizing their commitment to advancing environmental peacebuilding initiatives. Additionally, participants will gain access to the Geneva Water Hub alumni network, featuring dedicated online and in-person events.
