Coalition for Water Data and Peace Event

27.11.2018 Coalition for Water Data and Peace Event
14:00 to 17:00 World Meteorological Organization Headquarters Ground floor, Room B

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Geneva Water Hub, with the support of the Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations Office and the International Organizations in Geneva have the pleasure to organize the event : "Coalitation for Water Data and Peace". This event will explain the importance of data collection and data sharing at the international level with the aim of creating a coalition of Geneva Missions Champions to help raise awareness on the importance of water data in the context of peace and sustainable development.

In September 2017, the Global High-Level Panel on Water and Peace launched its “A Matter of Survival” report in Geneva and New York (abstract of the Report), which explicitly highlights the need to strengthen “knowledge-based and data-driven decision making and cooperation”. Earlier this year, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) HydroConference clearly outlined the need to reinforce water data availability and the provision of hydrological products and services for decision and policy making in water resources management (HydroConference Statement).

The detailed objectives are listed below:

  • Set the focus on the water data and peace agenda within the Missions in Geneva through the Global High Level Panel on Water and Peace’s Group of Friends for Water and Peace.
  • Showcase the WMO HydroHub, HydroSOS and WWDI and how they can contribute to the peace agenda.
  • Create a coalition of Champions within the Group of Friends to bring the water data and peace agenda forward to their respective government with the aim of mobilizing financial resources to support the WMO HydroHub, HydroSOS and the WWDI.
