International Water Law
This Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) provides a comprehensive introduction to international water law, delving into its origins, fundamental principles, and recent developments. Specifically tailored to the regulation of transboundary freshwater resources—including rivers, lakes, and aquifers—it equips participants with essential background knowledge and explores the principles and legal standards governing their use, sharing, management, and protection.
Comprising five self-contained modules, participants have the flexibility to explore the content in any sequence, though starting from Module 1 is recommended for new participants. Each module includes an evaluation in the form of a questionnaire or quiz, and participants who achieve an average score of at least 80% will receive a certificate of completion.
By the end of the course, participants will:
Gain insight into the complexities surrounding the regulation of transboundary freshwaters.
Understand the evolution of transboundary freshwater regulations.
Familiarize themselves with the key principles governing water resource regulation.
Explore the role of transboundary freshwater dispute settlement mechanisms in shaping international freshwater law.
Developed by the Platform for International Freshwater Law, a division of the Geneva Water Hub, in collaboration with the MOOC Team of the University of Geneva, this course is hosted on the Coursera platform.
